Reply:They are both beautiful songs. Slide was the first song I heard by them, so I have a certain loyalty to the song. However Iris has words that speak to me. Additionally Iris was me and my ex boyfriends "song." We are still friends now though. So I'm going with Iris. Haha.

I am doing a science fair project and realized that the amount of pigment in the iris can affect eyesight. I was wondering if any opthomologist out there knows!!

hazel - moderate melanin and Rayleigh scattering


amber - lipochrome pigment


blue - low, such as eumelanin

You need to leave the leaves alone after flowering so they can make enough food to keep the rhizomes healthy for next year's flowering. When they start to look ratty, you can cut the down shorter, to about 8 inches or so. If you cut the leave in a wedge shape (not each leaf, but the plant as a whole) about 4 inches at the outside and 8 inches in the center they look better and you have left enough leaf for food production.

Reply:Let all green parts die before mowing, otherwise blooms will not be as profuse the next year, possible nonexistent
Reply:What do you mean Mow. Are you going to run em down with a lawn mower?
Reply:Just cut off the flowers and leave the foliage which will help feed the plant for next year. If you cut off all the foliage all the plants energy will go to forming new foliage instead of setting blooms.

How do I germinate and grow Japanese Flag Iris Seeds?

I have some Japanese Flag Iris in my pond, its a purple blue flower instead of the yellow. This year there are masses of huge seed pods, but no room in the pond for them all to grow.


Does anyone know how I can get them to germinate and grow on? Do the seeds need to be underwater, or in wet compost, or will they do if kept damp?

hi we tried this in winter I think it was


get the seed s which are quite hard,


soak then or leave then in quite damp compost


leave them out on the cold / snow or freezer


and then wait about three months and


they will be quite small


but you should see growing irises.
