How do you clean the iris on a GE 9-9806 Camcorder?

My parents have a General Electric Camcoder model 9-9806. They have no image when they turn the camera on. They brought it some time ago to an electronics shop and the owner said that the iris was dirty and needed to be cleaned. The shop is not open anymore and my dad wants to know if he can do it himself. Any ideas how someone would clean an iris for this type of camcorder?

The iris was dirty? Unless your camera has been submerged in mud or something, I think it would be VERY hard for the iris to be so dirty that you won't even get an image. The most likely cause is that your camera is simply broken with time. It's a VHS camera after all, so it's pretty old, so the best thing you can do in this case is to get a new camera. You can get even a very cheap low-quality flash memory cam from Aiptek for less than $100, and it'll last you a longer than fixing an old VHS camera which can't even transfer video to a computer without an added converter. Hope this helps!

-----EDIT------

There could be many other causes, which I'm not sure of, but even if you do figure out what is wrong, it is still better to get a new camera. Unlike fine wines, cameras do not get better with time.
Reply:No I wouldn't do that.
