Why Goo Goo Dolls named their song "Iris"?

I am one fan of the Goo, I love Iris, but still don't know why the band named the song "Iris". Is there really a connection between the title and the content of this song? Or John just took the name from newspaper since he had problem naming his songs?

Why Goo Goo Dolls named their song "Iris"?
John didn't know what to call the song so as he was looking at some kind of newspaper?ad thing he saw the name iris(it was the name of this singer guy person) and he liked it
Reply:I love the goo goo dolls but i truly dont have the answer to the question...I think that John just couldnt think of a name, GO JASON!! (sorry i had to put that)
Reply:I think it's more metaphoric than literal. Weather he says iris in the song or not, there's still a connection to the title.
Reply:i love that song
Reply:iris is goo goos mommy
Reply:I believe it was related to drugs addiction in some way.
Reply:Iris I knew, but I doon't.
Reply:I love that song, it's one og my favorites. It's prolly a name of a kid or wife or GF at the time.. who knows..
Reply:The instrumentals in the song are heavily driven by guitar riffs and violins, with a steady drum beat beneath. The lyrics tell the story of an unknown person's desire to be known by the object of his love. However, he seeks to avoid the notice of others because of possible repercussions. The theme of these lyrics ties in directly to the film, in which an angel falls in love with a mortal woman, and can only stay with her by giving up his angelic nature and becoming mortal.

It was the first song that the Goo Goo Dolls had been asked to write specifically for a film. Songwriter Johnny Rzeznik has been quoted as saying he broke several years of writer's block and several years of sobriety simultaneously the night he wrote this track.
