Iris flowers?

I understand I should "deadhead" my iris after the flowers die. What exactly does that mean and how is it done. Thanks

Iris flowers?
The term dead head means to remove the dead flower. just pull the dead flower out of the stem. This encourages new blooms. A plant will continue to try and nourish anything that is still attached, including dead branches or dead flowers.
Reply:snap the wilted flowers off the stalk. you can just give them a little twist and they come right off.

Good luck!
Reply:You can pop them off right where they join the green stalk or trim with garden shears. Whatever you do, be sure to leave the green foliage! Even though it's not so pretty, it provides food for the bulb under ground, so that it can make big beautiful blooms next year. Take away the foliage too soon and you get not so many flowers next year. You can trim it back when the foliage turns yellow - at that point the bulb is getting nothing from the foliage.

Iris rhizomes?

My iris's have stopped blooming as much as they used to.. They have been in same area for about 8 years. should I dig them up and move them or apply some sort of fertilizer?

Iris rhizomes?
They have grown and multiplied, and now they are crowded. Dig them up, divide them up, give away the rhizomes you don't have room for, and replant about 6 inches apart. Don't fertilize them, they need to acclimate, rather than be prompted into growth. Put some nice organic fertilizer on them in the fall. Make sure to keep them moist (not too wet) after you replant if the weather is dry- they've lost some roots in the transplanting process.
Reply:Don't forget, they don't like to be planted very deep. Report It

Reply:Sounds to me like you need to dig them up and divide them.
Reply:it's good to divide these plants every three years or so! hostas, and daylilies are examples of plants that need the same treatment!
Reply:Dig them up every couple of years they tend to get too deep and then they don't bloom.

Iris tubers/bulbs?

I have had 6 iris bulbs in my garden now for their second season. The leaves are showing vigorous growth, but there are no sign of flower stems. How long will I have to wait? (North East England).

Thank you.

Iris tubers/bulbs?
There are many different varieties of Iris, depending on the weather they flower from late May through to the end of June. Some of mine are finished already, others are in full flower now and there are still some to come.

If you feel close to the centre of the leaf spread you should feel the swollen flower stem ready to emerge.
Reply:mine just put up its first flower stem the other day. it seems to happen quickly. i planted it last fall. the ones i just transplanted i figure won't bloom this year. but we'll see.

are they getting enough sun?

and are they planted shallow enough? they shouldn't go into the ground too deep.

Iris's???????

I have alot of Iris's in my yard. But they have not bloomed for the past two years. They are not even getting buds. Do you have any suggestions. I don't think that it is a matter of sun vs. shade because I have beds of them in both.

Iris's???????
Iris need to be separated every few years, if not they will not bloom. Iris are rhizomes. Dig up the rhizomes and cut off the old and decayed or diseased sections. Cut back the leaves to 3-4 inches. Then plant them in the soil after scratching in a little bone meal leaving the top half uncovered. Iris don't like to be totally planted under the soil, they will rot and disease will invade the rhizomes. I would wait until after the iris bloom season is over in your area before digging them up, not to risk the iris which have set bud for bloom. Every year after iris' bloom leave the leaves on the plant to yellow before cutting off as this will feed the rhizomes for next year.
Reply:Well see iri's need's alot of water and don't need to be in the sun mutch well here's a preview of other peoples iris's

http://pets.webshots.com/album/141738330...
Reply:They are probably too crowded and need to be divided.

See source for more info.
Reply:They may be in the dirt too much. Iris likes to lay on top and also check for boars. If you find bite marks wash with bleach. Good luck!

Iris blooms?

I have multiple Iris flowers but they did not bloom last year of this year. Are there certain types that do not bloom or have I done something to mine to cause them to not bloom? They grow every spring just as they should, but no blooms. Help?

Iris blooms?
This is for Bearded Iris.

Maybe you planted them too deep?

They need to be planted about an inch deep so the rhizomes surface still exposed.
Reply:The answer depends on the iris variety.

Some of the common types just need to be divided and replanted every few years. Some varieties do have a shorter lifespan than others. Some don't like to be crowded in with other plants, and some don't like it when debris builds up over time around them. They tend to like shallow holes..too deep and they stop blooming.

I have a siberian iris that grew into nice healthy looking plants but stopped blooming and I divided, re-set, re-planted, fertilized, you name it I did it to try and get it to rebloom...after I came to the conclusion it was just "spent" I finally went out and bought new ones this year.

Doesnt' really solve your problem, but if you have tried all above, then my advice is to dig them up, toss them out and replant with new rhizomes.
Reply:Hard to say, mine are in bloom right now. Did you have drought? Too much rain? Are they planted where they don't get enough light now? did trees overgrow them? How old are they? Maybe they've bloomed enough and are too old. Even a general idea of where you are located and what type of environment they are in would be helpful.
Reply:Make sure they are not crowding each other. This will choke them out. Depends on the variety, some only bloom every other year. Also, do not mow the leaves off when the bloom is done. This will effect the bloom. Good Luck
Reply:yes their are some that dont bloom. one that is white and blue very rarely blooms and has one flower for every 10 plants.

Oh sure, just get a low jack implanted on them while you are at it. The big disadvantage is that you have no idea what your kids position on privacy issues will be when they are an adult, therefore don't database them for life.

IRIS planting?

The wild iris which grow in my garden grow by the edge of a pond, their feet practically in the water yet the bulbs I have been given for Christmas specify well drained soil in my gardening book. Which do you recommend..

IRIS planting?
There are many many different types of iris. I have two types of iris growing with their feet right in my pond, one very tall with yellow flowers - a bit of a weed really - and another much more delicate variegated plant with blue flowers. Iris siberica likes a damp situation so the pond edge is a good place for them.

Most other Iris varieties prefer dry sunny conditions. Dutch Iris like their rhizomes planted facing south so they can bake. Iris ungularis likes to be tucked in at the base of a wall.

There are so many different types this link should help you out.

http://www.britishirissociety.org.uk/ind...
Reply:It is a difficult question you have asked. Not so much about the Irises you have been given as for the wild plants you have near your pond.

As already suggested (generally speaking) the irises require dry neutral soil. Lime stone should help for both functions.

About your wild flowers it sound a bit unusual. But, you have the proof that sometimes the books don't tell you the full story.
Reply:Your best bet is to follow the directions on the package. We have wild irises that grow in the mountains of California, and generally speaking iris dougasianii grow by streambeds and moist areas. Apparently, however, the type you were given do not fall into that category. Find a spot that has well drained soil--if it is clayish-add soil amendments such as sand or mulch to change the texture. Several type of iris actually add definition and variety to a garden!
Reply:I think there are some varieties that like to grow by water but most do not.

I'd recommend planting the new ones back from the water but near to it - because Iris look beautiful by water. Add horticultural grit, available from garden centres, and bone meal when you plant.

Your garden sounds great!!
Reply:The Iris family is a very large group of plants with different requirements for different varieties.

(They do not even have the same type of root system. Some are bulbs, some great fleshy roots called rhizomes.)

Some bulbs grow in ponds, some require infrequent deep watering or they rot. If you need more information. Any of the websites of the Nurseries that specialize in Irises will have planting instructions for all the types.

Follow the recommendations in the gardening book, especially if it mentions the bulbs by name or type, (Bearded, Siberian, Dutch etc.)

If your soil is very heavy add gypsum and any good mulch to make it drain better.
Reply:Wild Iris like to be wet. Domesticated Iris do like their soil to drain. I would suggest that you try planting some in a variety of soil situations to test what they really prefer. While gardening books are a valuable source of information, they are not to be considered "God's law".... Plants are adaptable. I have planted things in locations that should have never worked, but the plants grew great. Be adventurous
Reply:iris don't like water, too much water, %26amp; love sunny places and a regular field

jane
Reply:The wild iris by your pool are flag iris, a moisture loving species.Bulbs are of three varieties,Dutch,Spanish and English which will give a flowering period from May to July.Your book advises correctly, bulbs should be planted100 to 150mm apart,50 to 75 mm deep

during Sept;-Oct.A warm sunny spot and good drainage are needed, they make good rock garden plants.
Reply:There are water iris which will grow in water or moist soil; some will even do well in average garden soil.

Do you know what kind of iris you have been given? If they are tall bearded iris, and the bulbs, called rhizomes, are long and thick, they need a sunny to light shady spot, and do need to be grown in well-drained soil. They are definitely not water iris and should not be grown in wet soil. The rhizomes need to be planted with the top half of the bulb showing above the ground, and the roots buried.

There are also bulb iris, which are different yet, but they also need well-drained soil and a sunny spot. I recommend that you go with the instructions that came with them.

Cherish

Two circular hues of blue with a gray shade

So captivating

More than you know

False perceptions

That brought forth these questions of

Truth, love and hope

Now that you're injuring

I carry you with me just

Please hold on

Disappear and dissolve

A weakening wall

Will one day fall

It's wise to sever our loss

I redefine pulse

Through your iris

Love's not all lost

But it's nailed to my cross

And crucified all that I've held on

To be awaiting

Anticipating a touch such as yours

False affection

A spawn of neglection

A love, lust, hoax

Please understand me

That now where you're standing

Is closer then I'd hoped

Disappear and dissolve

A weakening wall

Will one day fall

It's wise to sever our loss

I redefine pulse

Through your iris

Your Iris

Your Iris

Disappear and dissolve

A weakening wall

Will one day fall

It's wise to sever our loss

I redefine pulse

Through your iris

Disappear and dissolve

A weakening wall

I think you would like the band MUSE. They're British, and really good. These lyrics sound like something Muse would make.

Falling Down (by muse):

I’m falling down

And fifteen thousand people scream

They were all begging for your dream

I’m falling down

Five thousand houses burning down yeah

No one is gonna save this town

Too late

I already found what I was looking for

You know it wasn’t here

No it wasn’t here

I was calling your name

But you would never hear me sing

You wouldn’t let me begin

So I’m crawling away

'Cause you broke my heart in two yeah

No, I will not forget you

Too late

I already found what I was looking for

You know it wasn’t you

No, it wasn’t you

Noooooo

Falling away

You never see me fall

No, I could not forget you

Falling down

A thousand houses burning down

No one is gonna save this town

Too late

I already found what I was looking for

You know it wasn’t you

No, it wasn’t you

No

Falling down

Now the world is upside down

I’m heading straight for the clouds

1. You cant have a 'circular hue'. Doesnt make sense.

2. 'Now that you're injuring'? Terribly unclear. What does that mean?

3. How do you 'sever a loss'. A loss is something already gone. You cant sever it.

4.'Neglection', not a word

Sometimes it cheapens good lyrics when they 'sound' like they're profound but don't really mean anything, you know?
Reply:I really like the lyrics. I'd have to hear the music to be sure...but the lyrics are quite moving.

When do Iris bloom?

This is my first year with Irises. So far, not blooms.. When do they usually bloom?

After they bloom, I may transplant them.. Do they prefer well drained soil, dry, or wet? Full sun, shade, part shade?

Any tips from Iris growers out there? =)

When do Iris bloom?
It should be a few weeks. Normally they bloom in early to mid-June, but I have a rebel iris in my yard that insists on blooming right now, and many of my others have buds on them, too. A lot of spring flowers have been early this year.

Irises do best in full sun, so if you have a sunny hillside, they will do well. I'd hold off on transplanting them until fall--that's when it's best to plant them, too.
Reply:Are you talking about the traditional bearded irises with the big showy blooms? Mine are blooming now (Eastern PA). Bearded irises need good drainage and full sun. You can transplant them after they bloom, but make sure that you do not completely bury the rhizome (the fat roots). These must be exposed to the sun in order for the plants to produce flowers. The rhizomes should be half buried, with the leaves on the north side, so that they get baked over the summer.

There are hundreds of other types of irises -- some of which grow in water, and others which prefer some shade and cool.
Reply:Mine usually bloom later in Summer. They like to be watered regularly and mine are in part sun and shade. They are in front of the house so shady in the morning and sun in the afternoon. They do ok getting a good watering a couple times a week. If you transplant them they usually will not bloom the next summer, but the following year are back to normal.
Reply:Well i have iris and they bloomed in late march. But the ones i planted in partial sunlight did,nt flower at all. They like well drained soil. I think you should go for full sun, because last year too, they did,nt bloom because of insufficient sun light. The physical difference between those which flowered and those which donot was that flowery onesd had broad foilage.Just try to be patient. I am sure your ones will bloom.
Reply:Well, I live in MA, and they're starting to show buds.

When I first got My bulbs, I threw them in my native soil (clay). They did fine. They like to be planted level or slightly above ground, (their bulb doesn't have to be buried completely)and they do like moisture. I love iris and they multiply rapidly!
Reply:We are in the same zone and the foliage is up but they wont bloom until next month. Mine get part sun/part shade and are pretty care free.

Is the iris indispensable for the sight? Do people who lack an iris see?

I read about a rare syndrom called WAGR that affects about 1 person on 400 000. It has many symptoms: within them a lack of iris. I was just wondering what consequences it had: if it meant blindness.

Is the iris indispensable for the sight? Do people who lack an iris see?
The Iris is not responsible for sight, the retina is. The Iris functions to control the amount of light allowed into the eye. Theoretically, you can see without an Iris, just do not let anyone shine a flashlight into your face.... because not only would it blind you with no ability to control the intake of light, but with no Irises, you look like a mutant freak.
Reply:yes it is because the photoreceptors control the size of the pupil. if you can't control the pupil then you would be in serious trouble on a sunny day or during a dark night. it doesn't mean blindness, you would just have to wear sunglasses constantly outside and always carry a working flashlight. kind of inconvenient.

Drying out Iris's?

I am getting ready to move and I wanted to dry out or press Iris's( when you put it in a book? I guess that is how you do it..) so I can take them with me and hopefully frame them someday. They are BUEATIFUL Dutch Iris's and they have 2 closed buds and 2 open blooms on one stem. ANY ideas or suggestions would be wonderful. I dont want to hurt or smash the buds. Any suggestions on leafs also. I just want to take a little of home with me across the US.

Drying out Iris's?
As for pressing the irises, I pressed many other types of flowers ( at the local school a pressed flower collection is required of students- so i helped as mom) and if you are careful, as irises have fleshy, moist and delicate petals- sandwich the flower between 2 -4 clean sheets of printer paper- then put some absorbent like paper towels as next layers of bread for iris "sandwich " on either side, and some newspaper too to absorb the moisture. put sandwich between 2 books- but not too much weight yet until some moisture comes out and softens bloom. change paper towels, loosen from printer paper if sticking- like next day- slide over or slip new paper under it to keep from making a mess. change towels, add more weight as it flattens. should come out great,

as for moving and missing your irises, why not take some rhizomes with you to your new place? you can even grow them in a pot on a terrace if you don't have a yard. I moved about 15 boxes of bearded iris cross country, i dug them, air dried, banged off dirt and packed in newspaper in boxes. did not plant for 2 months, they didn't bloom that year, but have thrived ever since! worth a try! good luck.
Reply:Flowers dried in desiccants retain the best color and shape. Silica desiccants are the most popular, and can be purchased at hobby and craft stores. Follow the package directions for best results.

Need help identifying an Iris?

I started these irises from seed that I traded for. The person that I traded with called them Iris setosa, but I am certain that that is NOT what they are. This iris is hardy to at least Zone 3, it is about 18" tall, and flowers in early to mid spring (June) and it sets seed easily and is fairly easy to start from seed. Here are some pictures

Need help identifying an Iris?
It looks like a Dutch Iris. Take a look at this one:

http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/im...

This is Iris Setosa:

http://www.twofrog.com/irissetosa.html

I've found another Iris Setosa that doesn't have markings as dark as the first picture, but there still seems to be more on Setosa than on your picture:

http://www.badbear.com/signa/signa.pl?Di...

I not sure you have Iris Setosa because the markings are really different %26amp; not as distinct on yours. Yours doesn't have the dark black lines on it.

As I look at your 3d pic I see some resemblance to this next Iris %26amp; yours, but I still can't see the same markings on yours. Setosa:http://www.badbear.com/signa/signa.pl?Di...

Here's some more Iris Setosa, as you can see here, there some really different versions:

http://www.badbear.com/signa/signa.pl?Ir...

I wish I could be more helpful, but I can't give you a clear yes or no here. Sorry.

P.S. I just noticed that the three petals on top of yours are indeed shorter than Dutch Iris. Maybe yours is Iris Setosa...because the three top petals are also short in both. Maybe the markings don't make any difference in this catagory.
Reply:I don't know what type of Iris it is but I did want to comment on your photo album. If all those flowers are in your yard, your yard must be a neighborhood attraction! They are beautiful. I have flower gardens but they haven't matured enough to be so abundant as yours appear to be. What state do you live in?

My cat changes its iris like in the morning his iris is blue,in the afternoon is black. What does this mean?
i'm pretty sure this means nothing. it's due to pigments (the things that make color) in your cats eye and you just see different colors depending on the lighting, angle, time, ect. that's why some people seem ot have blue eyes one day green the next.

if you're concerned just ask the vet next time you go in for a check up or search online.

Reply:In the moning in full light the iris is contracted to keep excess light out. there for you are probably seeing more of the cornea. In the evening when light is low the iris is open wide to let more light in, thus you are seeing the darkness of the open iris.

Artificial iris (permanent colored contacts), is it possible?

Ok so I was wondering if there is a way to change the color of an iris, I'm curious I have blue green eye's and am happy with them but I was wondering if there is a way to implant colored contacs in the eye that may give the color a more real effect rather than normal contacts I found this website so can it actually be done (if you give them the money and if it actually can be done),would it be a very risky procedure could you go blind?

Did you actually read these sites?

These devices are designed for plastic surgery to repair or replace damaged or missing irises. Note:

" ... prosthetic iris devices are not approved in the United States ... ", and they are "available only under a compassionate-use exemption from the Food and Drug Administration".

And no one is going to get an exemption from the FDA for an unapproved device because they want to get a new eye color. Plus a doctor who did this surgery without the appropriate FDA approval would be in danger of losing his or her license.

Aside from all that, basically any time you have surgery on your eye, there is a risk that the eye will be damaged and blindness will result. Opening the eye changes the pressure within it and the retina can detach, vessels can tear and bleed, lasers can be programmed or used wrongly and the retina can be burned, bacterial or viral infections can break out and destroy the eye, and so on.

It might sound like I am just trying to scare you, but this stuff really happens. There are actually even bigger problems sometimes: anesthetics can be used improperly and patients can be killed, the retina is part of the brain and open eye surgery can lead to brain infections and disability or death, etc.

All surgeries entail risks. That's why anyone undergoing an elective surgery needs to be really sure they want it - even understanding the risks. Didn't Kanye West's mother just die due to complications from plastic surgery?

Projector Iris?

I have a Panasonic PT-AX100U projector which is not under warranty. Im having an Iris unit issue as of most owners of this projector. To aviod them charging me a crap load i want to buy the iris unit online (which i can from panasonic) and install my self. Does any one know how to do this? any feed back is better then none...

Projector Iris?
Labor isn't cheap on things like projectors. The technicians are typically paid well. It's like the plummer in a way. They don't get paid much for turning the nut that stops the leak. They get paid for knowing which nut to turn.

Still, if you want to do it yourself, spend some smart money first and buy the service manual for your model. That will tell you if you need any special equipment for timing settings, voltage trimming, etc. Plus it will give you a better idea if you really want to tackle this job.

Pigmentary iris degenaration? or heterochronic iris?

Ok, so today I got a letter on the mail saying that my son was diagnosed with heterochronic iris when he was only 9 days old. When he went for his first check up the pediatrician said it was probably just a birth mark but that he was still going to refer him to an ophthalmologist to be on the safe side. Right now he is 4 months and im barely getting the refferal to see the ophthalmologist and his appt. is in 2 mo. I see nothing wrong with my baby he sees fine and he reacts to light and dark but im just very worried so can someone please tell me what this is??? Best answer gets 10 points!!=D

Pigmentary iris degenaration? or heterochronic iris?
What I would recommend is that you contact the opthomalogist's office and ask them what that means. Even if they haven't seen your son, they certainly can explain your questions before your appointment.

I have heard of this. I do not know anyone that has done it though... but as with any eye surgery risk of blindness in probably involved.

It is obviously completely up to you to change your eye colour but plastic surgery can and does many times leave people depressed because they do not recognize themselves and such.

If you get this done, the colour you have known your eyes to be for a lifetime and have seen in the mirror every day will be gone. You ll never be able to see them again.

there are good lenses out there that give very real effects!
Reply:I have never heard of such a procedure. Before considering something, that sounds to be quite evasive, I would do A LOT of research about it (as in medical journals). We only have two eyes and I wouldn't want to go blind because of something that may sound appealing but has yet to be studied in depth.

Glowing Iris?

A friend of mine had one of his eyes operated on after a peice of metal got stuck in it. Now his iris glows like an animals when caught in headlights on occasion. Can anyone explain to me why it does this? I'm not sure if he had his iris replaced, or if that is even possible.

Glowing Iris?
I haven't heard of this before but I am sure that when they operated they would have to but something into the eye to make it stay in place and not move around. It is probably some of that still in the eye.
Reply:Animal irises do not glow from headlights.

The anatomy of the eye that glows is the tapetum, an image intensifying ocular element in front of the retina in nocturnal animals.

A human has no tapetum, but his retina will retro-reflect light naturally due to the Stiles-Crawford pointing effect of the photoreceptor waveguides. A large pupil facilitates the area reflected; hence it is most noticeable at night in flash photography.

Your friend may still have some metal in his eye that could augment reflected and scattered light. He could also have fluorescein or other dyes that "glow" (fluoresce) left over from the surgery in his eye.

Is iris melonoma the only cause for freckles developing in a feline's eye iris?

My 12 year old cat is still pretty frisky for her age; however, 3 months ago her right eye started to change in color. (She has a black coat, with yellow eyes) Recently, the right eye "iris" has developed brown spots/freckles and it seems to look worse each day passing. Is this definitely a cancerous melanoma or could it be something that an anti-biotic may cure? It appeared very sudden. I am very worried. What else can cause these symptoms?

Is iris melonoma the only cause for freckles developing in a feline's eye iris?
This is a question you should call and ask your vet about. Last time I checked calling a vet for advice was still free. =) If your vet isnt phone friendly, call a different vet.
Reply:Take you cat to a vet TODAY!!! just as your Dr can't tell you what is wrong with your eyes over the phone- guess what neither can vets. Eyes are on of the most serious issues- once damage is done- it often times can't be undone. Your vet should apply a stain to the eye to check for scratches or ulcers, they should also use a device called a tonopen to check ocular pressure inside the eye- ask if they don't have one- to have them refer you to a vet "eye" Dr. I have seen cats loose their eyesight due to issues that may not have become so serious if addressed earlier- I have also seen a pet who's eye "exploded" when an ulcer in the eye ruptured and popped the eye like a raisin- that pet had to have the eyeball surgically removed.

PLEASE see your vet today- Do Not expect the vet the treat your pet over the phone- and if they do find a new vet- your pets vision is worth taking him in for an office visit.

Best of Luck.
Reply:You need to have the eye checked by a veterinary ophthalmologist. It could be melanoma or it could be age changes. Have it examined

Artificial iris (permanent colored contacts), is it possible?
That sounds dangerous, but I am no expert. Looks like you have been doing your research so you should be fine. But if you are willing to pay for that just pay to have your own personalzed contacts made for less $$. I know Paris Hilton does it (has her own contacts made, I mean)
Reply:I personally think that it's ridiculous and also it sounds really risky.

The world is just getting weirder %26amp; weirder...

My Iris bulbs are all mushy. What can I do to save them?

I don't know why they are mushy. Our lawn is infested with moths. Hundreds of them all over. I looked up borer moths online and the pictures I saw kind of looked like them, but they had black heads, and the ones we have are all tan all over. If they are the case, how do I get rid of them?

There are allso rolly poly bugs all over. Do they eat iris? Do I need to get rid of them?

Do I have to dig up all the iris and separate the mushed ones or can I just dig up the mushed ones and leave the solid bulbs?

My Iris bulbs are all mushy. What can I do to save them?
It sure sounds like you have the borer moths: "Adult moths have chocolate-brown front wings and lighter yellow-brown hind wings with a wing span up to 2 inches." *

By mid summer Iris borers do severe damage to iris by consuming the rhizome. In your case, the Iris borer feeding has allowed the entry of a bacterial soft rot.

I'd dig them all up to check %26amp; treat them. Discard rhizomes containing iris borer caterpillars and those with tunnels. Trim dried leaves and diseased foliage. Cut or scrape rotten or mushy spots.Place iris in solution of one part bleach to 10 parts water and stir for 1-10 minutes.

Place plants in a cool, shady place to dry for a day or two. (If leaf spot is a problem, soak in fungicide for 30 minutes after rinsing in bleach water).

Dust any wounds with sulfur.

Once plants are dry, replant in prepared bed.

This July sanitation is critical.

During fall, remove and destroy old iris leaves, stems, and any nearby plant debris. This removes and kills overwintering eggs, minimizing the risk of iris borers next year. Clean up iris beds anytime after we get a hard frost when female moths are no longer laying eggs.

Insecticide

A well-timed insecticide application can help reduce an iris borer infestation. Two options are acephate (Orthene) or spinosad (Bulls-Eye). It is important to time the application when eggs are just hatching. This is approximately when new growth is about four to six inches high. A repeat treatment 10-14 days after the first application may be necessary.

Natural

Beneficial nematodes are a natural option to help control some boring insects. These nematodes are microscopic worms that seek out and kill the caterpillars by introducing a bacteria. Research results using nematodes have been inconsistent, although they can potentially be effective in reducing iris borer populations.

Two species of nematodes are commercially available from natural garden supply catalogs or your local garden center. Both species (Heterorhabditis and Steinernema) have been shown to attack iris borer. Nematodes need a moist environment to survive and move. The easiest time to apply is during a rain shower. Lacking rain, water iris before and after applying nematodes. Apply nematodes when iris leaves are almost fully expanded but before flowering. Repeat the treatment approximately one week later. Nematodes are perishable; check the label for the expiration date.

Rolly poly bugs eat decaying matter %26amp; like wet places, so water Iris early enough so the ground drys by P.M. %26amp; remove debris. Sprinkle Diatomaceous Earth or hot pepper(Cayenne) on the ground around the base of the Iris.

My iris is yellow, and it "bleeds" into my eye, is there a name for it?

the iris of my eye is yellow, and there's a small strip of yellow that starts from the iris, all the way to the bottom of my eye, is there a name for it?

my eyes actually look really similar to yours, but i don't have this "bleeding" and i don't think there's a name for it. at least that i can find anywhere. i can only find out how the colors are determined.

Can I plant iris in containers??

I am not the greatest gardener but since buying a house last summer I am learning. We have kids, dogs, cats, and soon a infant so I dont want to plant things in the ground so I have started containers. I have columbines, grape hyacinth, mini sunflowers, salvia, lillies, and some other stuff. Back behind our house in what looks to be a old garden (previous owners didnt take care of the place) my husband found some plants they looked like Iris plants to me so I pulled them up. They are rhizomes so from what the lady across the street told me they are probably bearded iris. Can I grow these in large containers? She doesnt think you should grow anything in containers but she has a masive yard 2 yorkies and no kids!! I love iris and would love to grow these in containers someone help!!

Can I plant iris in containers??
yes u can i have 25 pots full of bearded iris, japanese iris, lilys, daisys, herbs u name it the key to keeping your plants in pots i found is i bury them with leaves when i rake in the fall next spring yeah great plants have already started again under those warm moist leaves if u dont u could loose a lot of plants as roots are exposed to colder temp....i live in cols ohio
Reply:Sure, with sunlight (full sun), water (not too much), and proper drainage. However, you may have to overwinter them if you have harsh winters. Bring them into the garage or kept in a shed because they'll be more vulnerable out of the ground. Otherwise, they'll look magnificent! And since they get quite tall, you could even put them in larger pots surrounded by pretty annuals (but they like room to breathe, so not too many).
Reply:Yes. You can even (but I wouldn't recommend) pull them out of the ground, put packing peanuts in a pot, fill the put with potting soil and plant the iris and it will survive zone 5 winters. I did that once (there was no where else to put it), and it was growing in the middle of some dogwoods. It's just fine now. Just make sure you can water it enough, without flooding it.
Reply:Hi Yes you can grown them in containers. I would suggest that you put them in large pot that way you will not need thin them out every year.
Reply:Yes but you will have to thin the root /bulb every year as they spread
Reply:Done it before with no problems what so ever....

Do you think Iris is an "old lady" name?

I absolutely LOVE that name for many, many significant reasons. I'm going to name my daughter Iris Evangeline or Iris Drake, but all of my friends say Iris evangeline sounds like an old lady's name. What do you think? I'll probably name her that anyway and tell my friends to shove it:)

thanks in advance:)

Iris color question for the experts...?

Ok, I know that iris color is determined by melenin. And I know that most babies are born with light eyes that gradually darken as the melenin develops. So, can someone please explain to me why my baby was born with practically black eyes (could barely differentiate his pupil from iris)? He is now 3 months old and has brillant deep blue eyes. All our family on both sides have blue eyes so I'm prettys sure the color won't change much more. Just wondering what explains why this is so different from the typical light to dark development.

If anyone can explain this correctly I will be both surprised and most appreciative! TIA

Iris color question for the experts...?
While in the womb, your baby recieved large amounts of melanin to the eye, but later on, the body regulates it.

Iris plants need help!?

My puppy ran through my boyfriend's Iris Garden and now all the leaves on the plants are no longer standing up, but stomped down. They are still connected to the base of the plant, though. I have put a fence around them so my puppy will no longer run thru them. However, I am wondering if the Iris plants will stand tall, again?

Iris plants need help!?
Janey,

It is unlikely the Iris plant leaves will stand up again. The fibers have been broken where the puppy stepped on them. Next year they will come back up just fine. Water and feed them just as usual, no trimming will be needed. In fact, the practice of trimming the leaves when transplanting Iris (every 3 to 5 years) has been called into question recently. I have only transplanted mine every 5 years, and haven't trimmed them at all. The result has been my Iris blooms grew larger and spread farther each year. For the expensive bulbs, that made me very happy. Is puppy's new name "Mud?" By the way, if you put in a fence that is less than 4 feet tall, Mud and others will be able to easily jump the fence.
Reply:These plants won't "stand tall" again this season. Don't despair, they won't die. This winter the stomped-down foilage will die as usual and next spring you'll have new tall foilage.

Irises are tough, hardy, and resilient. And beautiful. My irises are over 60 years old; they belonged to my great-grandmother. They've been stomped down, moved to three different towns, accidentally mowed over, and flooded out of their beds. They'll probably outlast me.
Reply:They should no problem, MAYBE not this year but surely by next spring. Irises are pretty darn tough plants. I completely cut my back each fall to the ground, and leave them in the graound and they ALWAYS pop right back up!!

Iris colour?

What part of the iris (circular or radial muscles) gives eye colour and why does the iris have a colour at all?

Iris colour?
The iris has color due to melanin, the same pigment that gives hair and skin their color. This is the reason why fair-skinned people would also more likely have lighter-colored irises.
Reply:melanin in iris gives colour to our iris.it,s for absourbing some lights that there are in my arround that they arent nessessary for seeing.

What is eating my iris and clematis?

i have some iris in a raised-bed with some clematis next to them. And i noticed that something has been eating round holes on my clematis' buds and cutting off my iris flower stem and clematis young growths (they don't eat the iris flower but just cut off the stem)

Both happens about a foot up (or just below the top bud of the iris) from the soil line, below that, things are pretty much untouched. So I don't think it's slugs or snails.

What ate them?

What is eating my iris and clematis?
Slugs and snails will eat round holes in the leaves but they hardly ever eat the stem off. To check if it's slugs or snails go out there about 3 hours after dark with a flashlight and see if you see any. If they are not there by then, they are probably not your problem. It sounds like a small mammal to me. Rabbit, chipmunk, ground hog--something like that. Do you ever see any of those things around your place?
Reply:Sounds like rabbits to me.

Iris flowers?

If I plant different colored iris in the same bed, overtime do the iris all turn one color?

Iris flowers?
no only new off spring would be different. you can prevent that by dead heading your flowers.

Iris surgery?

does anyone know the nature of the iris sugery for cosmetic purposes ,do they change the eye color by changin their starburst or do they create whole new starburst and iris pattern like contact lenses , and are the color they use natural?

Iris surgery?
There is no iris surgery for purely cosmetic reasons. There are a # of iris surgeries that improve the distorted appearance of a damaged iris and these are called puplloplasties.

The name Iris...?

I love the name Iris for a girl, evene though it's greek and not my heritage, which the heritage thing doesn't really matter to me that much, the thing that bothers me though is that whenever I search the name Iris and its meaning it says it was a greek gods names, which is against my belief, I believe in God himself, not gods. Would it be okay if I used the name Iris still? It has a nice meaning, but one of the "origins" is a greek gods name. What would you do?

I'm strong on my religion, and believe in God, not gods!

You think its okay to use the name still, disregarding the origin?

The name Iris...?
I really love it too and I don't think it matters that it's Greek. Nowadays, most people name their son/daugther names they really love, but have no idea what they are. Think about it, you have everyone naming their daugther Marie even though they're not French. It's the same thing! It's fine if you use it, even though you don't believe in gods and you're not Greek.

Iris is such a pretty name, I love it too and you should use it even though it's the name of a Greek god. To tell you the truth, most people think of it as the name of the flower. I love Greek mythology and even I don't know it's the name of a Greek god. Actually being the lover of Greek mythology I am, I don't think it is the name of a Greek god.

Gratz on your baby girl, and thanks for choosing such a lovely and classic name for your girl!
Reply:Dont worry its the name of a flower..so it has two meanings..just think youve named her after the flower..nice name by the way.
Reply:It wasn;t actually a Greek gods name. The name is just dedicated to him, whatever that means. Anyhow, I think Iris is a lovely name. It is my grandmother's first and my aunt's middle names. I think it is one of those names that will be coming back into popularity really soon. I've seen several people ask about the name in just the past few weeks.

Iris is also the name of an interesting looking flower. Maybe that is the theme you could use to decorate her nursery? Tiny iris' on teh walls?
Reply:I think that God knows you he knows your heart and he knows the name only means bueaty to u and has nothing to do with the other Gods. The only thing God cares about is you raising that little girl to know him. You are on your way to being a very good mother.Congratulations and Good luck.
Reply:My grandma's name was Iris and I thought it was beautiful. She was a devout Christian and it didn't bother her any that it was also the name of a Greek goddess because she was named after someone in a book her mother read.

Along your line of thinking, Brigid is an Irish goddess and I know many Christian women named Bridget (which is a derivative) or some other variant and that has nothing whatsoever to do with their faith. There are many other names that are similar that deities of other religions and cultures use.

Pick a name because you like it or don't. The origins based in religion have nothing to do with the name itself in today's society, and having such a name will not determine what belief system the child will have. It's silly to think that it will.
Reply:My book of baby names says Iris means Rainbow.

In Spanish, arco iris means just that.....rainbow.

I also love that name.
Reply:I think it's a nice name, although I'm slightly biased as it's my name. Instead of thinking too much about the goddess association, remember that it's a pretty name, you like it, it's also the name of a flower so if you want to you could name it after the flower rather than the goddess. And it has to be a pretty strong name for a goddess to have been given it, doesn't it? It's also a pretty original name for a young person so your daughter will have a pretty unique name.
Reply:If you really like the name, then go right ahead. I absolutly love the name Iris because it is unique and not many people are named it. Plus, it's not a name your child is going to grow up to hate (lol)! Don't think of the name as pagan or having a greek mythology background, think of it as a gorgeous, purple flower that grows in the Spring. I hope you relize different names do have different meanings, so it is ok. Best of luck to you with your baby! :)
Reply:Iris is a beautiful name, and if you are strong in your faith and don't mean for the name to be true to the exact origin, I think you should name your baby Iris. If it bothers you that much, you should think about changing it. What does your family think?
Reply:Iris is a beautiful name! Personally I think you should use the name and perhaps not associate it with Greek heritage as you say it conflicts with your lineage and beliefs. Iris is a gorgeous flower, if someone would go as far as to try to point out what are "assumed" discrepancies between your child's name and your culture, just make reference to the flower meaning! When you mentioned the name initially I automatically thought of the flower semantic. Love the name though *Good luck*
Reply:I would think of it as a name of a pretty flower instead of a fictional Greek god.
Reply:If you really love that name, then i would use it! It's not like people are going to judge you based on what your daughters name is! (and if they do, thats stupid!)
Reply:I believe that should be ok. I mean if you truly are religious than don't name her that but I mean if you can get passed that part then pick it. The child makes most of the name not the parent. So stick with it if you like it.

Iris Control, Gain = better quality video?

Hi everyone, the reason for my odd question is because I was told that if I fix the "Iris" manually on my camera and not let the "gain" kick in, I can get a cleaner video with less noise.

Is that true? ... if so, exactly how does that process work because I've lowered the Iris, but the picture gets darker, what about the gain?

I'm a newbie when it comes to this stuff.

In advance Thanks for any tips.

Iris Control, Gain = better quality video?
What you heard is exactly right. To get the best video picture, you need a lot of light. If there is not enough light, the camera will compensate by increasing the electrical amplification, but this significantly reduces the picture quality. It is the equivalent to using a higher ISO film setting in a digital still camera.

However, closing the iris does not improve the picture by itself. The smaller iris setting has to be compensated by using MORE LIGHT!! Indoors, that means using lighting fixtures. outdoors you should consider reflectors especially when shooting in deep shade. Otherwise all you get is just a darker picture, as you already noticed.

So manual settings on the iris is not the secret, but rather making the extra effort to be sure the scene is well lit. Pros use manual setting on iris only to keep it from changing during the shot, especially if the camera is panned.

Does the Iris get damaged when the eye is transplanted or donated to other person ???

The Iris is considered to be the most important part in the Iris Recgonition Technology. In such a case, when the eye is donated or fixed to someother person, does any change take place to the iris patterns ???

Does the Iris get damaged when the eye is transplanted or donated to other person ???
Eye transplantation means only the cornea is transplanted not entire eye ( I think you have seen minority report of Tom Cruise) But in actual world we only can transplant cornea only, how ever there are many surgeries of eye which can damage iris, like surgery done for glaucoma %26amp; some extrent simple catract surgery also. so as finger prints may change with scar on plam such limitation is also there for even iris based recongnestion technology
Reply:No I am Physcian MD Gen Med Report It

Reply:The so called "eye transplants" actually only involve the cornea and not the entire eyeball. To be able to transplant an entire eyeball would require some amazing microsurgery to stitch the optic nerve into place and as such is not possible yet.
Reply:The iris is protected with great care, and any damage would be highly unusual.

Water Iris trouble!?

I bought a new water Iris a couple of weeks ago (Iris Pseudacorus; Yellow Water Iris) and is was in very good condition. However, since then it doesn't seem to be doing very well with the leaves going yellowy and curling, when they were a lovely green before. I've tried changing it's position in the pond and also the depth (currently it's pot is about an inch in the water) but it still seems sad. All the other plants I have seem to be doing great apart from this one.

Help! Thanks in advance.

Water Iris trouble!?
This is considered an invasive specie in many states and it is one which will take over and choke waterways very quickly. Since you are having problems with it I suspect that it is transplant shock. It takes about 2 years for them to get established and start growing and flowering.
Reply:Pseudacorus iris is a very vigorous and invasive plant, so I am surprised that yours is not doing well. Perhaps it just needs a while to get used to being outdoors, if it was kept in a garden center greenhouse before. Wait a few weeks before worrying.

It is a marginal plant, and can grow in a few inches of water or on damp soil, so your spot in 1 inch is probably fine.

The name Iris?

I'm currently scripting a play set in 1940's Manhattan. There is a 19 year old character I'd like to name Iris, but I'm wondering if anyone were named Iris back then, because the oldest Iris I've met is in their 30s.

I have grown iris in containers and they did just fine, but then again I grow all kinds of plants in containers. I found that the iris need a rather large container as they do tend to sprout babies and spread, but I rather neglected mine and they did just fine.

Iris question?? Not blooming...?

Last year I bought an iris from an iris farm, The iris is supposed to bloom twice a year, in the fall and spring. It has been almost a year and still no blooms, but seems to me multiplying well. Should I did it up and transplant it to where it gets more sun, and is it okay to do this during this time of year? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Iris question?? Not blooming...?
Poor flowering is normally due to planting in excessive shade, using excessive nitrogen fertilizer, or planting the rhizomes too deep. Limited flowering may also occur if plants become too crowded and need dividing. Irises sometimes take a year off bloom after transplantation to settle into their new homes so you don't get bloom the spring after planting.

Bearded irises can be divided any time after your last frost date in the spring, but the optimal time to divide them is 6-8 weeks after bloom. Avoid transplanting irises in very hot weather (90+ F degrees), but do get them transplanted back into the ground a couple months before freezing weather to give them time to root in well before winter. Irises moved before bloom will often lose their bloom that season, which is why it's best to wait until after bloom to dig and divide.

Iris will thrive in most well-drained garden soils. Planting on a slope or in raised beds helps ensure good drainage. If your soil is heavy, coarse sand or humus may be added to improve drainage. A pH of 6 to 7 is preferred.

Iris should be planted so the tops of the rhizomes are exposed and the roots are spread out facing downward in the soil. In very light soils or in extremely hot climates, covering the rhizome with 1 inch of soil may be desirable. A common mistake is to plant Iris too deeply.

Bone meal, superphosphate and 3-5-5 are all effective. A light application in the early spring and a second light application about a month after bloom will reward you with good growth and bloom. Avoid using anything high in nitrogen, as nitrogen encourages rot problems.

Bonemeal is a traditional fertilizer for bulbous plants that

releases phosphorus slowly, but it is usually too low in

nitrogen to be used alone. An additional source of

nitrogen must be used together with bonemeal. Wood

ash is an alternative way to supply potassium. For

average situations, apply 3 to 4 pounds of bonemeal and

5 to 6 pounds of wood ash to each 100 square feet of

soil.

The Iris is a flowering plant in the genus Iris, native to eastern and central Europe and northern Asia.

It is a herbaceous perennial plant growing to 50-120 cm tall. The leaves are glaucous green, narrow and fairly rigid, blade-shaped, 40-80 cm long and 2-4 cm broad. The flowers are typical of an iris, borne in late spring or early summer on unbranched or sparsely-branched stems held above the leaves, each flower 4-7 cm diameter, mid- to purple-blue, often with a paler whitish or yellowish center.

Cultivation and uses

Iris sibirica is widely grown in gardens in temperate regions around the world. It is the parent plant of many hybrids, used because of its attractive foliage and ability to flourish in a wide range of climates; the hybrids vary widely in flower colour.

I hope this was help full!

Reply:Be patient. I have found there is about a two year time lag before they really start blooming. They like to sit a while and get established. I don't look for a lot of blooms on iris until they have been in the ground a full year and maybe another. They are tough and dependable but they do like to wait a bit before they bloom.

Blooms in the autumn? That is a new one on me.

Iris Borer?

I have 3 rhizomes of the same variety of Bearded Iris planted. They are grouped together. Some of the leaves and two of the flower stalks have 'raw' streaks. Meaning they look like the outer layer is stripped away. Is this Iris Borer damage? If so, do I need to pull the rhizomes and burn them?

Iris Borer?
From what you've described, it is the caterpillars (of the female Iris Borer) feeding that is causing the visual damage to the leaves. According to the attached website, your rhizomes can be salvaged despite the damage already done.

Here's an excerpt from the article that deals with your problem.

"Around July, the Iris borers have worked their way down to the rhizome and by this time they are about two inches long and pinkish tan. This is only the first half of the Iris dilemma, because at this stage, bacterial soft rot attacks. Just like with humans and animals, an injured plant is prone to infections which compound the difficulty."

"Bacterial soft rot causes the leaves to look water soaked and mushy, Often they collapse and become a stinky mess. The rotten smell is a tell-tale sign of bacterial soft rot in Irises. To deal with this disease and the borers both at once, dig the entire Iris plant up and shake the dirt off the rhizomes. Examine the rhizome for visible rotten spots and cut them off. Small tunnels may be visible."

"Soak the whole rhizome is a container of 10% laundry bleach to 90% water. Let them sit in this solution for about an hour. This should drive out the caterpillars and kill the bacteria. Cut the leaves back to 4"-5" in length. Let the rhizome dry, and for insurance, dust it with garden sulfur. Replant them, keeping the rhizome high in well drained soil to guard against bacterial soft rot in the future."

Hope this information helps solve your problem. Good luck with the iris!

Iris flowers in Greece?

Among the duties of the Greek Goddess Iris was that of leading the souls of dead women to the Elysian Fields.

In token of that faith the Greeks planted purple Iris on the graves of women. I am interested in incorporating the Iris into a tattoo. Im wondering if there is a specifice strain of Iris that should be depicted or if ANY purple Iris will work? Ive read that Dalmation Iris grow in Europe, buy I want to be sure. Any thoughts?

Iris~~~~~~~~♥?

And I'd give up forever to touch you

Cause I know that you feel me somehow

You're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be

And I don't want to go home right now

And all I can taste is this moment

And all I can breathe is your life

Cause sooner or later it's over

I just don't want to miss you tonight

And I don't want the world to see me

Cause I don't think that they'd understand

When everything's made to be broken

I just want you to know who I am

And you can't fight the tears that ain't coming

Or the moment of truth in your lies

When everything seems like the movies

Yeah you bleed just to know your alive

And I don't want the world to see me

Cause I don't think that they'd understand

When everything's made to be broken

I just want you to know who I am

I don't want the world to see me

Cause I don't think that they'd understand

When everything's made to be broken

I just want you to know who I
