The name Iris...?

I love the name Iris for a girl, evene though it's greek and not my heritage, which the heritage thing doesn't really matter to me that much, the thing that bothers me though is that whenever I search the name Iris and its meaning it says it was a greek gods names, which is against my belief, I believe in God himself, not gods. Would it be okay if I used the name Iris still? It has a nice meaning, but one of the "origins" is a greek gods name. What would you do?

I'm strong on my religion, and believe in God, not gods!

You think its okay to use the name still, disregarding the origin?

The name Iris...?
I really love it too and I don't think it matters that it's Greek. Nowadays, most people name their son/daugther names they really love, but have no idea what they are. Think about it, you have everyone naming their daugther Marie even though they're not French. It's the same thing! It's fine if you use it, even though you don't believe in gods and you're not Greek.

Iris is such a pretty name, I love it too and you should use it even though it's the name of a Greek god. To tell you the truth, most people think of it as the name of the flower. I love Greek mythology and even I don't know it's the name of a Greek god. Actually being the lover of Greek mythology I am, I don't think it is the name of a Greek god.

Gratz on your baby girl, and thanks for choosing such a lovely and classic name for your girl!
Reply:Dont worry its the name of a flower..so it has two meanings..just think youve named her after the flower..nice name by the way.
Reply:It wasn;t actually a Greek gods name. The name is just dedicated to him, whatever that means. Anyhow, I think Iris is a lovely name. It is my grandmother's first and my aunt's middle names. I think it is one of those names that will be coming back into popularity really soon. I've seen several people ask about the name in just the past few weeks.

Iris is also the name of an interesting looking flower. Maybe that is the theme you could use to decorate her nursery? Tiny iris' on teh walls?
Reply:I think that God knows you he knows your heart and he knows the name only means bueaty to u and has nothing to do with the other Gods. The only thing God cares about is you raising that little girl to know him. You are on your way to being a very good mother.Congratulations and Good luck.
Reply:My grandma's name was Iris and I thought it was beautiful. She was a devout Christian and it didn't bother her any that it was also the name of a Greek goddess because she was named after someone in a book her mother read.

Along your line of thinking, Brigid is an Irish goddess and I know many Christian women named Bridget (which is a derivative) or some other variant and that has nothing whatsoever to do with their faith. There are many other names that are similar that deities of other religions and cultures use.

Pick a name because you like it or don't. The origins based in religion have nothing to do with the name itself in today's society, and having such a name will not determine what belief system the child will have. It's silly to think that it will.
Reply:My book of baby names says Iris means Rainbow.

In Spanish, arco iris means just that.....rainbow.

I also love that name.
Reply:I think it's a nice name, although I'm slightly biased as it's my name. Instead of thinking too much about the goddess association, remember that it's a pretty name, you like it, it's also the name of a flower so if you want to you could name it after the flower rather than the goddess. And it has to be a pretty strong name for a goddess to have been given it, doesn't it? It's also a pretty original name for a young person so your daughter will have a pretty unique name.
Reply:If you really like the name, then go right ahead. I absolutly love the name Iris because it is unique and not many people are named it. Plus, it's not a name your child is going to grow up to hate (lol)! Don't think of the name as pagan or having a greek mythology background, think of it as a gorgeous, purple flower that grows in the Spring. I hope you relize different names do have different meanings, so it is ok. Best of luck to you with your baby! :)
Reply:Iris is a beautiful name, and if you are strong in your faith and don't mean for the name to be true to the exact origin, I think you should name your baby Iris. If it bothers you that much, you should think about changing it. What does your family think?
Reply:Iris is a beautiful name! Personally I think you should use the name and perhaps not associate it with Greek heritage as you say it conflicts with your lineage and beliefs. Iris is a gorgeous flower, if someone would go as far as to try to point out what are "assumed" discrepancies between your child's name and your culture, just make reference to the flower meaning! When you mentioned the name initially I automatically thought of the flower semantic. Love the name though *Good luck*
Reply:I would think of it as a name of a pretty flower instead of a fictional Greek god.
Reply:If you really love that name, then i would use it! It's not like people are going to judge you based on what your daughters name is! (and if they do, thats stupid!)
Reply:I believe that should be ok. I mean if you truly are religious than don't name her that but I mean if you can get passed that part then pick it. The child makes most of the name not the parent. So stick with it if you like it.
