Can I plant iris in containers??

I am not the greatest gardener but since buying a house last summer I am learning. We have kids, dogs, cats, and soon a infant so I dont want to plant things in the ground so I have started containers. I have columbines, grape hyacinth, mini sunflowers, salvia, lillies, and some other stuff. Back behind our house in what looks to be a old garden (previous owners didnt take care of the place) my husband found some plants they looked like Iris plants to me so I pulled them up. They are rhizomes so from what the lady across the street told me they are probably bearded iris. Can I grow these in large containers? She doesnt think you should grow anything in containers but she has a masive yard 2 yorkies and no kids!! I love iris and would love to grow these in containers someone help!!

Can I plant iris in containers??
yes u can i have 25 pots full of bearded iris, japanese iris, lilys, daisys, herbs u name it the key to keeping your plants in pots i found is i bury them with leaves when i rake in the fall next spring yeah great plants have already started again under those warm moist leaves if u dont u could loose a lot of plants as roots are exposed to colder temp....i live in cols ohio
Reply:Sure, with sunlight (full sun), water (not too much), and proper drainage. However, you may have to overwinter them if you have harsh winters. Bring them into the garage or kept in a shed because they'll be more vulnerable out of the ground. Otherwise, they'll look magnificent! And since they get quite tall, you could even put them in larger pots surrounded by pretty annuals (but they like room to breathe, so not too many).
Reply:Yes. You can even (but I wouldn't recommend) pull them out of the ground, put packing peanuts in a pot, fill the put with potting soil and plant the iris and it will survive zone 5 winters. I did that once (there was no where else to put it), and it was growing in the middle of some dogwoods. It's just fine now. Just make sure you can water it enough, without flooding it.
Reply:Hi Yes you can grown them in containers. I would suggest that you put them in large pot that way you will not need thin them out every year.
Reply:Yes but you will have to thin the root /bulb every year as they spread
Reply:Done it before with no problems what so ever....
