I have one yellowish bump on each eyeball beside the iris (coloured part) on the inner part. What is it?

My sister noticed a few weeks ago and thought they were strange. I have always noticed them and thought they were normal. It's just one small bump beside the iris on the inside (part closest to nose) on each eye. My husband also has them and I noticed my cousin does also. My sister and kids don't. What are these bumps?

Actually, I doubt its a pterygium. Most likely its pinguecula.
Reply:I agree completely with Mama girl.. she knows what she is talking about.
Reply:If its on both eyeballs, I wouldnt worry to much about it. Maybe ask you doctor when you go next. I wouldnt run out and scheduale and appointment for that.
Reply:Hi,

These are called pterygium, quite common to those who live in sunny, hot dry areas, esp. southern hemisphere. The tendency to get them is hereditary (both my brother and dad have them). I had two, one on each eye, went to the doctors (once in NZ and once in UK). They referred me to the ophthalmologist. The ophthalmologist in NZ removed it with eye drop anesthesia, a scalpel and tweezers, took about 20 mins. The other (in UK on NHS), he put me under general anesthetic, removed it and applied a kind of gauze graft with tiny stitching. With the latter procedure, I managed to get an eye infection, due to the stitch irritation, so it took much longer to heal..

These are only really removed for cosmetic reasons however, mine started off quite small, and grew to boarder the edge of my iris to cause discomfort. There is apparently a 50 percent possibility that they will come back once removed, but I have never had a problem (operation was 5 and 3 years ago).

Hope this helps.
