What is the legend behind the Osiris and Iris?

In the novel Osiris Rising by Ayi Kwei Armah, he uses the old Egyptian characters of Osiris and Iris to tell the story of the betrayal of trust on the continent of Africa. What is the real legend behind these names?

What is the legend behind the Osiris and Iris?
The Legend of Osiris and Isis is this: Osiris, Isis, Nephthys(sp?), and Set are all Brothers and sisters. Osiris is married to Isis and Set is married to Nephthys(sp?), I know there is alot of incest within the egyptian patheon. Osiris had an affair with Nephthys and because of this Set murdered his Brother Osiris. Set tricked osiris to get into a coffin, sealed it and sent it down the river where it came to rest on a tree which grew around him and he died. Isis and Anubis (the son of Osiris and Nephthys) found his body and when trying to resurrect osiris, Horus was concieved. Anubis went through the mummification rituals and Osiris then became the lord of the afterlife. Isis went into hiding with Horus for fear of Set. When Horus was old enough, Isis poisoned the God Ra-Atum and in order to heal him needed to know his true name and told this to Horus who then absorbed Ra's power and became Re-Horakty (sp?) There's more but it goes on to other stuff
Reply:I would have been more thorough but that would have taken all day for me to type and for you to read Report It

Reply:kudos to the first answer, but incest wasn't a real concept back in the days. just remember that the gods and goddesses are personifications of forces of nature.

Nut the sky goddess had three husbands:

1. Ra, the sun god. it makes sense that the sky and the sun are going to have a relationship since the sun does belong in the sky. they had 2 children, Osirus and Horus. Osirus was the black fertile land and Horus was called the elder. u might saying, "hey, Horus was the son of Osirus and Isis", that is correct. but the Horus that Ra and Nut gave birth to is a spirit, he is the essence of what the other Horus would become.

2. Geb, the earth god. it also make sense that the sky and the earth will have children because they meet at the horizon. they also have 2 children together, Set and Nephthys. Set is the red desert sand, the evil child in the story. and nephythys is the helper.

3. Thoth, the god of wisdom. the sky and wisdom also belong together for the sky is all knowing and all seeing. they have a child together, Isis, the throne.

the story is pretty long, so here are the links to my professor's website. he explains the story in great details.

Reply:Asar/Osiris represented Orion, Aset/Isis represented Sirius and Huru/Horace represented the sun. When the Sun rose in the constellation Leo, the sphinx was looking into the east at the sun rising in the meridian. That is when the Sun in its ecliptic path is going towards Sirius and Orion. That is why to see the Horem Akhet/sphinx is in the form of a lion because KMT symbolically saw it as being the Son/Huru/Horace who was the personification of the Sun, returning back to his Mother/Aset/Isis who was the personification of Sirius, and Father/Asar/Osiris who was the personification of Orion. All the Pharos had to be raised from the dead to the living perpendicular with the grand masters grip of the lions paw, between the paws of Horem Akhet/sphinx. This is because every King wanted to be One with Asar, the 7 stars in Orion’s belt, to be born again to the resurrection to a new life. You had to receive the light of knowledge for the resurrection to be born again. In the Tahuti Text Asar says that he is going to build his kingdom on earth as it is in heaven. (Luke 11:1-13.) Also when the star in the East rises it told them that Aset was coming back. When the star rises it gives the appearance of being red white and blue. That is why Asar is reaching back for his Eastern Star, Auset.
