I need help transplanating bearded iris?

I know this is not the time to divide iris bulbs but I had an opportunity to get a wheelbarrow full of these today. Now, I need to know what to do with them.

The book says to prepare the soil, trim them, and plant them leaving the tops exposed.

What can I expect if I plant them now? Will they bloom again this year?

Iris are much hardier than most of us realize. If you got lots then pick the ones that look healthiest and plant them with any sprouts pointing upward out of the soil. You should be able to see on them how deeply they were planted. The ones that don't bloom this year should give you a glorious display and amazing scent next spring. There may be some empty tubers. It means that squirrels or other garden rodents got at them. Just chuck them or use them as fertilizer.

Enjoy your new plants.

Good Growing,

Reply:I transplanted mine around the same time as you're doing. If you don't trim them too much or damage the bulbs, they may still flower this year. For sure, you'll get a nice growth of leaves and they will flower next year.

Try to keep the roots as intact as possible and plant them out as soon as you can. I'm in Toronto and ours have just barely started growing so it may not be too late at all.

Good luck.
Reply:they might bloom the odd one but as a rule they won't till next year
